'MY SEEING EYE DOG"
BY BOB PERKS
"Oh, how cute!" she said.
"Thanks, my dog's nice too!" I said smiling.
"I meant the dog," she replied laughing at my silly attempt to steal a compliment.
My youngest son would call it a "Babe Magnet". A guy and a puppy is a wonderful combination if you want to attract the ladies. But in my older years, I'm lucky if I attract flies. My Lucy, our newest member of the family, just loves the attention. In fact, that's all a puppy really wants. Constant attention, love and a few treats. Life is so simple when you are a puppy.
"She's my seeing eye dog" I told her.
"But you are not vision impaired," she noted quickly.
"No, but she has opened my eyes to the world in so many ways," I said.
"You mean all the love she gives," she added.
"I mean the things in this world that make life wonderful. We've forgotten what they are," I told her as I picked Lucy up.
I continued, "Did you ever see grass dance? I have. Have you chased your shadow lately? That's more exercise than I've had in years. Then there's the sounds that birds make as you struggle and scamper all over the yard trying to see where it's coming from. How about the wind? I've taken that for granted most of my life. But when you are new to the world it becomes an invisible touch. You wonder who did it and why. Twinkling holiday lights hold your attention and seeing the American flag wave at you makes you want to play with it. Then there's rain. Oh, the rain! The first rain drops on your head and back causes you to stop and look around. The feeling of being wet is new. The joy of being dried with a big fluffy towel is wonderful. Music coming from two boxes high upon a shelf in the living room causes you to tilt your head back and forth in awe and wonder. Each note is a gift to your senses. You hear the beat of a drum and you think someone is approaching. Every stretched out hand means either a treat or a loving touch. Cuddling next to another warm body is a source of comfort and peace. And the world is so much bigger when you lie down on the floor and see it from the view of a five pound puppy. The space behind the chair is a world in itself. No one can find you there if you don't want to be found."
"I've never thought of it like that. I guess I've been blind to the world too." she said.
"We all are. We call it growing up." I told her.
She caressed Lucy's face in her hands and thanked me.
So when was the last time you saw the grass dance and felt the rain on your face? See the world again for the first time through a song, the wind, the rain, the call of the birds. Accept an outstretched hand as a welcome gift. Dance with a blade of grass and chase your shadow around the yard. The world is always new to one who appreciates the gifts it holds.
Believe in You!
